What is Krishna Consciousness?
The Krishna Consciousness Society Newsletter has finally arrived!
But what is Krishna Consciousness? Who is Krishna? What is this society all about?
The Krishna Consciousness Society is part of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) which was founded by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. But who is He?
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami started off His journey in 1965 as He sailed to USA. His trip to the United States was not sponsored by any religious organization, nor was it an easy one, experiencing two heart attacks and severe sea-sickness, yet out of sheer determination and compassion He continued on His mission of coming to give us all true happiness and success.
He arrived in the USA in 1965, with just 40 rupees and a suitcase full of His books but in the next twelve years what He went on to do is simply incredible, He:
- circled the globe fourteen times
- authored more than 80 books
- became good friends with Beatles front-man George Harrison and
- established over 108 institutions world wide
But what has this got to do with Krishna Consciousness? Hopefully the following short conversation Srila Prabhupada had with a reporter Sandy Nixon will help:
Ms. Nixon: My first question is very basic. What is Krsna consciousness?
Srila Prabhupada: Krsna means God. We are all intimately connected with Him because He is our original father. But we have forgotten this connection. When we become interested in knowing, “What is my connection with God? What is the aim of life?” then we are called Krsna conscious.
